Some Examples to Guide You
EXAMPLE A: Reverse-Royalty
George Williams is a supervisor in an insurance company. He has written a novel based on his service in Viet Nam. His novel is 180 pages long. We design the cover and layout, edit the book for grammar, proof it, get his final approval as we do with all authors, and publish 100 copies. He has agreed to pay a start-up fee of $640, which he does with a VISA card. We ship him the 100 copies priced with a regular retail barcode with the price he set at $17.95, along with local news releases, announcements for area schools interested in having him as a speaker, local libraries and other organizations inviting him to speak and autograph copies of his books. As we do with all our authors, we copyright his book, secure an ISBN number, and also list his book on the Internet with Bowker, Bookscape, and Google with a web page for further sales, and he agrees to send us $2.70 royalty (15%) for each book he has sold at the end of 90 days. George mails us $270 and makes $885 profit for himself on the 100 copies. If he cannot sell all 100 copies, he returns the unsold copies to us at no further costs on his part (except, of course, return postage). Or he can re-order as many additional copies as he wishes on a per-copy basis.

EXAMPLE B: Advance Payment, No Royalties
A local organization, Worldscape Enterprises, has decided to publish an annual report of its organization, programs, and accomplishments. The book is 70 pages long, and 50 copies are ordered. We design, edit, proof, and secure final approval from the group, then publish the book. They intend to give the book away to their members, friends, and associates, and they remit a total of $447 in full advance payment for their 50 copies. Since the books are given away, none is returned “unsold.” But the organization may re-order additional copies at the same rate.
EXAMPLE C: Reverse Royalty
A retired school teacher, Amy Lancaster, decides to publish a collection of poetry she has written over the years. Her book is 80 pages long. After she approves its cover, design, layout and final editing, she orders 75 copies priced for retail sales at $14.95 and sends us a start-up fee of $480. We agrees to pay us a royalty of $2.25 per book (15%) sold within 90 days. She sells all 75 copies quickly and sends us $168.75, making $472 for herself, and orders 25 more copies at the same rate.
EXAMPLE D: Advance Payment, No Royalties
A local group of photographers decide to publish a collection of their favorite photos and sell the “coffee table” type books at various exhibits and events in the region. Each of the eight members provides 15 of their favorite color photos, and the finished book is 120 pages, which they approve in advance. They prefer not to pay royalties to the publisher and decide to keep all profits themselves. Each agrees to sell 20 copies at $40 each, and they remit a total advance payment of $18.50 for each of the 160 copies they order. They average selling 16 copies each, giving them a profit of $2,160. Because this is not a “reverse-royalty” book publication, any unsold copies cannot be returned to the publisher.
